Experimenter is among the films that will premiere in Sundance Festival, Variety is reporting. Festival director John Cooper noted that while this year’s 16 Premieres selections will be among the buzziest, most commercial titles in Park City “they’re not without an independent feel to them, and that’s what I’m always looking for. There is a very independent spirit behind these films.â€
The Sundance Film Festival runs Jan. 22-Feb. 1. Let’s hope Winona attends it!
Experimenter official website went live last week and with it, tons of gorgeous images of Winona as Sasha Milgram:
Here’s the official film synopsis
Yale University, 1961. Stanley Milgram (Peter Sarsgaard) designs a psychology experiment in which people think they’re delivering electric shocks to an affable stranger (Jim Gaffigan) strapped into a chair in another room.
Subjects are told it’s about memory, but the experiment is really about conformity, conscience, and free will. Milgram is trying to come to terms with the Holocaust and to test people’s tendency to comply with authority.
Milgram meets Sasha (Winona Ryder), a former dancer living in New York. Their courtship includes a visit to the Yale lab, where Milgram’s experiment has yielded disturbing results: 65 per cent of Milgram’s subjects deliver shocks that may be fatal, obeying polite commands from a lab-coated authority figure (John Palladino). Winona is currently in New York filming The Experimenter, starred also by Peter Sarsgaard. The film follows the experiments of Stanley Milgram, an American social psychologist, who developed the idea of six degrees of separation and the infamous Obedience Experiments at Yale.
The experiments saw people follow instructions blindly and confirm to the point they were willing to shock their peers with up to 450 volts.
On the film, Winona is the social phychologist Sasha Menkin. Check below pictures taken on Saturday while Winona was filming with her little co-star Lucy Fava.
The Hollywood Reporter – Peter Sarsgaard and Winona Ryder are starring in Experimenter, The Stanley Milgram Story, an indie drama written and directed by Michael Almereyda.
The movie will start shooting June 5 in New York and is being produced by Uri Singer of B.B. Films, Fabio Golombek of F.J. Productions, and Intrinsic Value’s Aimee Schoof and Isen Robbins.
According to the producers, the script is based on “the true story of famed social psychologist Stanley Milgram, who in 1961 designed the controversial Obedience Experiments at Yale University, observing the responses of ordinary people who believed they were sending harmful electrical shocks to an affable stranger.
“The experiments were about conformity and authority, and their implications continue to be deeply unsettling and resonant. But this was just the start of a wide-ranging career for Milgram, who also came up with the Small-World Experiment, the basis for Six Degrees of Separation.”
Sarsgaard is playing Milgram, while Ryder is playing one of his students, Sasha Menkin, who helps with the experiments and with whom he falls in love.
