“Stranger Things” First Reviews

Excitement has us, my friend!

Stranger Things is about to be released (episodes will be up to streaming next Friday, July 15) but the first reviews are already popping up and I cannot be more happier with the results. Check some excerpts (spoilers free):

Deadline – Steven Spielberg didn’t exactly have the best box office outcome this past weekend with The BFG, but in a way he’ll be back next week with what looks like a bigger and more classic hit on the small screen. Launching on July 15 on Netflix, the Winona Ryder-led eight-episode Stranger Things is nothing if not a surprising, sometimes scary, moving and successful homage to the era of Spielberg’s ET and the 1980s themselves — as well as the films of the great John Carpenter.

(…) Yes, there are a lot of clichés in Stranger Things, but like outdoor string lights, they all hold together. They also cast a warm glow on the sheer enthusiasm and respect the series has for those who have come before and a very particular time in America’s recent history that now feels so far and so close at the same time.

io9 – The biggest reason is that Stranger Things is so entertaining that it’s totally worth the time commitment, because believe me you will be mainlining the whole thing once it hooks you in. The characters are especially well-drawn, no small feat when most of them are around 12 years old.

JoBlo – After a surprisingly popular trailer popped Stranger Things onto my radar, I may have thought twice before checking it out. After seeing the first three episodes, I can say this is going to be the best show of the summer and may rival some of the blockbusters hitting theaters.

(…) While the show is very much centered on the child characters, it is the performances from David Harbour as Chief Hopper and Winona Ryder as grieving mother Joyce that really make this show work. Ryder has always been a great actress but it is amazing to see her show so much depth as a mother torn apart by the abduction of her son under odd circumstances.

The List – Stranger Things is beautifully made. The fashion, the synth soundtrack, even the typeface in the opening credits are spot on. It could be a lost 80s relic. Capturing the look and feel of the era, referencing Poltergeist, Close Encounters of the Third Kind or a darker remix of ET.

Thankfully Stranger Things isn’t just an exercise in retro nostalgia; it’s also a gripping mystery with heavy sci-fi overtones. Winona Ryder’s distress, as Will’s distraught mother, is palpable; there’s also a wonderful naturalistic air to the free and easy camaraderie between Will and his geeky friends, who set out to find him after he disappears.

Winona Ryder talks sequels and Once Were Warriors

Thursday, Jul 7, 2016

The Neo Zealander website Stuff has posted a new interview with Winona, which also feature a new picture of the promotional ‘Stranger Things’ photoshoot.

For Winona Ryder, talk of Beetlejuice 2 is just that – talk.

The female star of Tim Burton’s cult 1988 comedy about “the ghost with the most” says she’s in the same situation as all of us when it comes to when or if a sequel might get made.

I don’t really know what’s happening. I think it’s a situation where the script has to be perfect and everyone has to be available,” the now 44-year-old Ryder says while promoting her new 1980s-set Netflix sci-fi series Stranger Things, which debuts here on July 15.

It can’t be made without Tim, Michael [Keaton, who played the title character] and a perfect script. It is just an iconic and beloved film. I get stopped all the time, even by little children, by people who want to talk about it, so I don’t want to do it unless its perfect.

While discussing her career, childhood and latest role as a mother who must confront terrifying forces in order to get her son back, Ryder also revealed that she spent years trying to get a sequel to another of her cult films – 1988 high school black comedy Heathers.

I always thought there were ‘Heathers’ in the real world, not just in high school. ‘Heathers’ in Washington, for example. But nothing ever came of it, they would all just sort of laugh at me and whatever, because the original movie wasn’t ever a hit, it just became a sort of a cult thing.

Ryder also says she would love to one day come and visit New Zealand and admits to being a fan of both Whale Rider and Once Were Warriors. “Oh, my god, I love that movie. It was really heavy – about the streets and the underworld and it had the actor [Cliff Curtis] who played the father of the little girl in Whale Rider.”

And, she confesses, that she always thinks of our country in relation to another movie from her heyday.

I always think of that scene in Point Break with the giant wave and Patrick Swayze saying he’s ‘not going to paddle to New Zealand‘.”

It’s Time to Believe with new “Stranger Things” Trailer

Thursday, Jun 30, 2016

A new trailer for upcoming Stranger Things was just released, with some new scenes and a bit more information of the new mysterious series.

Starring Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Natalia Dyer, Cara Buono, Charlie Heaton, and Matthew Modine, the story will center around the sudden disappearance of a young boy in a small town, and what happens as the investigation unfolds. And it looks like the explanation will have something of a supernatural touch. Here’s the official synopsis:

99 out of a hundred times, the missing kid is with a parent or relative. What about the other time?

A love letter to the supernatural classics of the 80’s, Stranger Things is the story of a young boy who vanishes into thin air. As friends, family and local police search for answers, they are drawn into an extraordinary mystery involving top-secret government experiments, terrifying supernatural forces and one very strange little girl.

“Stranger Things” arrives on July 15th. Watch the new trailer:

Time: 90s Icon Winona Ryder Is Making Her Comeback

Monday, Jun 27, 2016

Time has published a very large and great interview with Winona (with the never used before title “making her comeback”). On the interview she talked about the show, her personal life, obviously about Johnny Depp, and nostalgia. Check it:

When you meet Winona Ryder, it’s hard to shake the feeling that she belongs to another era. It’s not just that she doesn’t appear to have aged a day since she reached icon status in the 1990s with films like Edward Scissorhands and Girl, Interrupted. It’s also the way she lives her life. She says that she still keeps old cassette tapes of important voicemails and bootleg VHS tapes of concerts. It took her an “embarrassingly long time” to figure out how to take a selfie on her phone. On the topic of the Internet she muses, “I do wonder sometimes if part of me didn’t want to have kids because it’s such a crazy world. You really can’t control what they see.”

Luckily for her, this era—that is, the present one—also belongs to another era. Nostalgia is the strongest tide in Hollywood, from sequels and reboots to original films that harken back to a bygone era—and nobody evokes the past quite like Winona Ryder.
