“Pippa Lee” review

Feb 12 ◊ by Luciana ◊ 1 Comment »Movies, Review

A grown-up love story that’s rambling, quirky and sharp-eyed about mid-life doldrums, Rebecca Miller’s cinematic adaptation of her own novel works largely because it doesn’t take itself too seriously. An across-the-board solid cast backs up Robin Wright Penn’s enjoyable central performance which, like much of the film, is believable without being entirely naturalistic. Still, this is not a sure-fire commercial prospect even on the independent circuit. It comes on like a woman’s take on a Philip Roth novel (except with a sense of humour), and despite its oddball tone and upbeat ending could end up placing in the same $5 million region as Roth adaptations like Elegy or The Human Stain in the US. It may have better luck in urban markets abroad, especially in Europe (more…)

The movie has 27 min of running time, and it’s written and directed by Blake Sennett, Winona’s ex boyfriend. It had a screening past January 15 on Flickerfest, the Australian International Short Film Festival.

Sundance Review: The Informers

Jan 21 ◊ by Luciana ◊ 3 CommentsMovies

By Kelly West:

The Informers is all about sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll. Well, new wave, technically but you get the picture. The film takes place in 1984 and follows a number of people most of whose lives are intertwined in some way or another. There’s the newscaster, the dissolute rock star, an ex-con, a voyeuristic doorman, and a bunch of rich blonde people doing drugs, sleeping around and over-indulging.

The story of the film essentially revolves around people who want it all and drift through life without a moral compass, wondering why they can’t seem to find happiness. After the death of one of his equally shallow friends, Graham (Jon Foster) begins to look at his other buddies, his girlfriend, his family and the life he’s living in a new light. He comes to learn that he actually loves his girlfriend Christie (Amber Heard), a shallow woman who seems to be sleeping with everyone, including Graham’s best friend. We see Graham struggle with coming to grips with his feelings while also trying to maintain his usual superficial lifestyle. (more…)
