WINONA Ryder believes actors are nauseating - particularly when they complain about their pampered lives.

“We’re sickeningly well-paid people who have charmed lives. But that doesn’t mean you don’t have problems,” says Ryder, the star of films as diverse as Alien: Resurrection, Heathers, Edward Scissorhands and the upcoming Sex And Death 101 opposite Australian actors Simon Baker and Sophie Monk.

Ryder, 35, has a point. It could even be argued that since she was convicted for shoplifting from a Beverly Hills department store in 2001, the problems have overshadowed the acting.

Anything written about her almost has to start with the offence that earned her 480 hours of community service, even before her achievements can be mentioned (she has had two Oscar nominations: one for Little Women, the other for Age Of Innocence). Without the shoplifting conviction, Winona Ryder would undoubtedly be one of the biggest actresses in the world.

Now, not only is the story the first thing anyone thinks of when her name is mentioned, but she’s so painfully aware of it she finds it hard to put herself out there.

This year, she refused to go to Cannes with Keanu Reeves, her co-star in upcoming film A Scanner Darkly. Reeves thinks she wasn’t ready to have to deal with questions about the incident while even her signature on a petition to pressure the Bush administration into signing the Kyoto Agreement on climate change was refused as she was a convicted felon.

“That was pretty embarrassing,” she says, downplaying the effect it had on her.

Born to alternative parents she dotes on, Ryder was raised on a commune with LSD guru Timothy Leary as her godfather.

With that kind of company and Sex Pistols concerts seen as the perfect entertainment for a seven-year-old, Ryder was never going to be your average girl next door.

By the time she was old enough for high school, her clothes were so weird and androgynous that she was actually beaten up after being mistaken for a gay boy.

Ryder is going through a revival of attention in her career.

She recently graced the cover of US Vogue and her next movie to be released in Australia, Sex And Death 101, will be followed by Ten, in which she will star opposite Naomi Watts’ partner Liev Schreiber.

Sex And Death 101 revolves around a man whose life is turned around by an email, which includes the names of everyone he’s had sex with and ever will have sex with. His situation gets worse when he encounters a femme fatale (Ryder) who targets men guilty of sex crimes.

With the pressure of making probably way too many films while she was in her teens, and the break-up of her relationship with that other Hollywood outsider, Johnny Depp, it is unsurprising that by the age of 19 Ryder was suffering from depression and panic attacks.

“My heart would be going at 90 miles an hour, my breathing would get laboured and I’d be sweating buckets. It was like that feeling when you’re almost in a car crash, and you swerve and for a second there are needles going through your head and all through your body.”

“I was embarrassingly dramatic at the time,” she laughs, with a bit of hindsight, of the end of her relationship with Depp, one she describes as “a fiercely deep love”.

“But you have to remember I was only 19 years old.”

Apart from the bizarre cry for help or whatever the 2001 shoplifting incident was really about, at 35 Ryder seems to have turned into the sort of grown up her parents would be proud of: independent, thoughtful, creative and sensitive.

If the sensitivity is occasionally difficult for her to handle, at least it makes her the sort of actress that goes beyond the sort of hair flicking and short skirts that seem to be the only requirements for success in Hollywood today.

“I’ve learned that its OK to be flawed,” says Ryder now that her career, and her life, seem to be back on course.

“I’ve learned that life can be messy, that some days you glide and some days you fall but most important that there are no secret answers out there.”

Winona told Vogue magazine: "It's this weird pressure that I probably shouldn't even talk about. You know how people ask, 'Who is the love of your life?'

Winona Ryder is terrified of growing old alone.

The ‘Girl, Interrupted’ actress, who previously dated Johnny Depp and Matt Damon, fears she may have already met and lost the love of her life.

Winona told Vogue magazine: “It’s this weird pressure that I probably shouldn’t even talk about. You know how people ask, ‘Who is the love of your life?’ God, I hope I haven’t met that person yet, in a way, because I’m single. I hope I haven’t had that, since that would be sad.”

Winona also spoke about her conviction for shoplifting when she was caught stealing from the Saks Fifth Avenue department store, in Beverly Hills, in 2001.

The actress has blamed her bizarre behaviour on prescription painkillers.

She explained: “Two months prior to my arrest, I broke my arm in two places, and the doctor was giving me a lot of Oxycodone and I was taking it at first to get through the pain. And then there was this weird point when you don’t know if you are in pain but you’re taking it.

“Have you ever taken painkillers? It isn’t a reckless state, like you’re out of your head. It’s just confusion.

“It all happened in the December after the September 11 terrorist attack. I couldn’t believe so much attention was being paid to me, when terrorists had just attacked us, and there was all this really important news going on. It was embarrassing.”

The 35-year-old brunette refuses to feel guilty about the incident because she didn’t “physically” hurt anyone, but says the experience helped her to stop taking Oxycodone.

Winona said: “I didn’t have this tremendous sense of guilt because I hadn’t hurt anyone. Had I physically harmed someone or caused harm to a human being, I think it would have been an entirely different experience.

“When it was over I moved to San Francisco to be near my parents. I made a very conscious decision not to work. No one in my family ever got angry with me. Concerned, yes, but not concerned with a drug problem or anything. Because after that night I pretty much didn’t ever… If you are ever arrested, you can’t ever do that again.”

The actress has been enjoying a clandestine romance with Rilo Kiley guitarist Blake Sennett for several months, and even rushed back from Italy’s Milan Fashion Week last month to be with him in the US.

A source said: “They’ve been seeing each other for a couple of months now and Winona seems really smitten.

“They make a real effort to spend time together, and she even dashed back from Milan Fashion Week to be with him when the band were performing a concert in Washington.

“Things seem to be going really well between them.”

Ryder has a history of dating rock stars.

She previously romanced Soul Asylum star Dave Pirner and Counting Crows singer Adam Duritz and has been romantically linked to singer-songwriter Ryan Adams and Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl.

Ryder was briefly engaged to Johnny Depp after the pair met on the set of ‘Edward Scissorhands’ when she was just 17.

The 35-year-old actress recently admitted she fears she has already missed out on true love.

She said: “You know how people ask, ‘Who is the love of your life?’ God, I hope I haven’t met that person yet, in a way, because I’m single. I hope I haven’t had that, since that would be sad.”

MARTINEZ — Susan Polk went from laughter to tears in mere seconds Friday as she told jurors which actors should play her and her late husband Felix Polk in the movie of her murder trial.

Polk — who is defending herself — laughed when she recounted a recent interview she did on Court TV in which she said actress Winona Ryder should play her.

“She knows what it’s like to be in jail,” Polk mused. Ryder was arrested for shoplifting in 2001 and eventually was sentenced to three months’ probation, community service, fines and restitution.

As for her late husband, Polk appeared giddy when she said she thinks actor Anthony Hopkins should play him because of his chilling performance as the serial killer Hannibal Lecter in “The Silence of the Lambs.”

Prosecutor Paul Sequeira was not amused. “This is funny?” he said, exasperated.

Sequeira noted that in the television interview Polk had laughed in the exact same manner when she mentioned Hannibal Lecter. “He was a more likable character than my husband,” she said with a girlish giggle.

Polk, 48, is on trial for the murder of her 70-year-old psychologist husband in October 2002. If convicted, she faces 25 years to life in prison. She claims she stabbed Felix Polk after he attacked her during an argument, and that his bad heart killed him – - not the more than 20 stab wounds.

While Polk guffawed at the thought of Hopkins portraying her late husband, moments later she was moved to tears. Through sobs, she said she can laugh about her horrible experience now because her mother taught her to have a sense of humor.
“I could look at my life as a tragedy or I could look at it as a triumph,” she said, telling the jury that she found strength through humor just like the protagonist in the popular novel “Bridget Jones’ Diary.”

“Is it a crime to have a sense of humor in my situation?” she asked indignantly.

In his recross-examination, Sequeira also asked Polk why she told the jury that her husband had lied about having a nurse as a child of whom he was particularly fond. The prosecutors has pointed to numerous instances in which Polk has hurled false accusations at people whom she counts as enemies.

Polk has attacked the credibility of the two sons who have testified against her. She has attacked the credibility of her former defense attorney Daniel Horowitz, telling the jury that she believes he may have been involved in his wife’s murder.

To disprove Polk’s claim about Felix’s childhood nurse deception, Sequeira read from a family history written by Felix Polk’s mother that mentions the nurse. Polk said she’d never seen the written history but would still not admit the nurse existed.

Polk is not only deceptive, the prosecutor argued, but she is also anti-Semitic. Sequeira read from numerous diary entries and letters in which Polk made derogatory remarks about Jews and her belief that Israel knew about the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks before they happened. He also said Polk made anti-Semitic remarks to jailhouse guards.

“How do you know people are Jewish? Is it the way they look? Is it their names?” Sequeira asked.

Polk denied having a bias against Jewish people. “I don’t hate Jews. My sons are half-Jewish,” Polk has explained.

However, she added, she does believe that Israel allowed the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 to occur. She has testified that she believed Felix Polk was an Israeli spy, and that he ignored her psychic predictions of the attacks that she made during hypnosis sessions. She says Felix put her in a hypnosis-induced trance so he could use her psychic powers of prediction, and made her an unwilling participant in Israeli espionage.

“I was not a willing agent for Israel. I did not even know,” she said.

Polk believes a campaign to discredit her began when she discovered Felix’s plan. She believes the murder case against her is part of the conspiracy: “Agents who come out of deep cover are often subject to campaigns to discredit them.”

The notoriously kooky pair have begun a lusty onset romance they hope will continue.

Hollywood has a surprising new star couple in Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder. Sparks ignited the minute they began shooting A Scanner Darkly, to the shock of all on the Texas set – including the lovebirds themselves!

“Keanu and Winona are old pals; they made Dracula together in 1992 and have been friendly ever since,” says a source close to the couple.

“There had never been any hint of romance, but that’s all changed – and rather quickly! They’re hardly apart at all now they’ve hooked up.” The encounter began innocently enough when the stars – who share a reputation as Hollywood oddballs – requested suites in the same hotel for the two-month shoot downtown Austin.

“Keanu and Winona started hanging out as soon as they arrived,” says the source. “They have suites on the same floor. They’re old friends and knew they’d want to spend time together when they were stuck in the hotel. But they weren’t prepared for the love-in that was to come.”

A Scanner Darkly, which began shooting on May 17, is set in a world gone mad on drugs. Keanu plays Fred, an undercover cop hooked on a drug called Substance D, Winona plays a doctor trying to help him kick his habit. It’s being helmed by School Of Rock director Richard Linklater and co-stars Robert Downey Jnr, Woody Harrelson and CSI: Miami regular Rory Cochrane.

According to our source, Winona, 32, and Keanu, 39, began with casual flirting which led to more passionate pursuits.

“It started with simple things, like Keanu would wolf-whistle when Winona came out of make-up and tell her how great she looked. Or he’d pull her aside during a rehearsal and whisper a joke in her ear,” our source explains.

“She’d fondle his fake hair and tease him about wearing a wig. She’d also mess with his meals, put cheeseburgers on his tray. Keanu is a vegetarian! He’d chase her around the set throwing the cheesburger at her.

“If only all actors could get along so well during a shoot.”

Their cast and crewmates didn’t suspect Keanu and Winona were getting on very well indeed until they were caught kissing. Then they readily confessed their secret.

“They explained that after a few days in each other’s company sparks began to fly. They were surprised. But they aren’t known for restraint, so they gave in to their urges.

“Once they started spending time behind closed doors they realised they had a good thing going an have shared as much private time as they can squeeze in between shooting.

“Keanu and Winona cause a stir in Austin every time they leave the hotel together,” adds the source. “They’re not playing those leave-by-seperate-exits star games. They stroll out of the front door most mornings, hand in hand and couldn’t care less who’s watching them.”

It’s a long time since either star had a serious relationship. Keanu went through terrible grief in April 2001 when girlfriend Jennifer Syme died in a car crash not lang after giving birth to their stillborn child. He’s since been seen out with ex-girlfriends Amanda DeCadenet and Autumn MacIntosh.

“Keanu’s had a lot on his mind lately,” says a friend of the Matrix star. “His sister Kim is still battling leukaemia. He’s not over losing Jennifer and their baby. And his career could be in better shape. It’s good to see Winona’s putting a smile on his face.

“Keanu is a known Hollywood nut and a proud outcast. He claims to have no real home. He says he gives away most of the money he makes. He shuns Hollywood parties, doesn’t care how bad his reviews are, and laughs when people say his acting style ranges from wooden to flat.”

Winona was recently seen smooching with Heath Ledger in a Hollywood nightclub and her long list of famous lovers includes Johnny Depp, Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg and Beck. But in recent years she’s been better known for stealing clothes, not hearts. Her 2001 arrest for shoplifting at Saks Fith Avenue, Beverly Hills, led to a trial with revelations of precription-drug abuse, and her conviction.

“When Winona was arrested, Keanu’s name and phone number were in her filofax and she later claimed the store security guard stole celebrity contact from it,” says a pal.

“Winona and Keanu are kindred spirits. They have been stars since they were teenagers. Winona goes with her feelings and doesn’t hold back, just like Keanu. They’re very suited.

“Keanu’s very intense and when he dives into something he dives headfirst,” his pal explains. “Right now he’s mad for Winona. He’s thinking they might have a future together.”

A disgruntled former employee of Saks Fifth Avenue testified Friday in Winona Ryder’s defense, accusing the security chief of Saks’ Beverly Hills store of saying he would invent evidence to prove the actress shoplifted.

Michael Shoar was one of four witnesses called by attorney Mark Geragos, who indicated Ryder was unlikely to testify before the defense rests on Monday.

“I don’t think so, I feel pretty good where we’re at right now,” Geragos said after putting Shoar, two police officers and a district attorney’s spokeswoman on the stand.

Ryder, 31, is accused of stealing more than $5,500 worth of goods from the Beverly Hills Saks on Dec. 12. The jury is expected to get the case on Monday.

Shoar, who worked in Saks’ Costa Mesa store, said he spoke by phone with the Beverly Hills Saks’ asset protection manager, Ken Evans, shortly after Ryder’s arrest. Evans was a key prosecution witness who narrated videotapes of her shopping trip.

“I asked him how he was doing?” Shoar said. “He said he had a very important case now and basically he would nail that rich Beverly Hills bitch on shoplifting charges.”

Shoar said he later had lunch with Evans and “he was very anxious, nervous and he said he would bring her down one way or another. … He would make enough evidence so it would show the shoplifting charge was true.”

Evans testified earlier that he did not make such comments.

On cross-examination, Deputy District Attorney Ann Rundle asked Shoar if he was no longer allowed to come onto Saks Fifth Avenue property. Shoar said yes.

“Isn’t it true that you have an ax to grind with Saks Fifth Avenue?” she asked.

“Yes, I do,” Shoar said.

She then elicited from Shoar parts of a story in which he and his wife threatened to sue Saks over an alleged affair the wife had with someone at a Saks store.

“Isn’t it true,” said Rundle, “you are very angry with Saks Fifth Avenue?”

“No, I’m not,” said the witness as courtroom spectators and some jurors laughed.

Questioned again by Geragos, Shoar said he received a letter of recommendation from Saks after leaving the company, that he had no ax to grind and did not come to the trial to commit perjury to get even with Saks.

Geragos also called two Beverly Hills police officials.

Detective George Elwell said sensor tags which Ryder allegedly cut off merchandise were kept locked in his desk drawer until they were needed at the preliminary hearing and they weren’t booked into evidence until then.

Police Lt. Gary Gilmond, acknowledged that at a news conference after Ryder’s arrest he said she was videotaped cutting off the tags. He said he later learned there were no such tapes.

Security videotapes played in court only show Ryder moving through the store’s boutiques, not inside dressing rooms where the tags were allegedly removed.

District attorney’s spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons acknowledged issuing a press release using Gilmond’s erroneous account.

“It was not inaccurate that the Beverly Hills police said this at a news conference,” Gibbons said. “I hadn’t seen the videotape and I still haven’t seen the videotape.”

Winona Ryder has finally appeared in court in Los Angeles as her trial for shoplifting at a Beverly Hills store began on Thursday, after 10 months of delay.

The Hollywood actress entered a not guilty plea to revised charges related to the taking of $6,000 (£3,877) of designer goods from Saks Fifth Avenue, one of Hollywood’s most exclusive outlets, last December.

The rest of Thursday’s hearing was taken up with selecting the jury with particular efforts being made to find a panel unaffected by the publicity surrounding the case.

Ms Ryder, 30, faces charges of grand theft, burglary and vandalism, and could face up to three years in prison on each count. She denies all the allegations.

A fourth charge of illegal possession of the painkiller Oxycodone was dropped by the prosecution last week.

Ms Ryder left the Beverly Hills Superior Court soon after entering her plea to the amended charges.

She was ushered in and out of court by her legal representatives and did not speak to reporters.

Meanwhile, about 40 prospective jurors were asked to fill in questionnaires to judge their suitability.

The questions focused on their attitudes to Ms Ryder in the light of the high level of media coverage since her arrest.

They were asked six questions, including whether they had any sympathy or antipathy toward Ms Ryder herself, and if they had read any of the numerous media stories about the case.

‘Prior acts’

The first day of the trial was also taken up by behind-closed-doors discussions of pre-trial motions between the judge and lawyers.

Ms Ryder’s lawyers were angry when a newspaper report on the eve of the trial claimed that prosecutors planned to call employees from two upmarket stores to support a motion regarding possible “prior acts” by Ms Ryder.

The “prior acts” motion had been filed under seal and the judge had been expected to rule on whether it would be admissible at trial.

Ms Ryder’s publicist Mara Buxbaum accused prosecutors of leaking the reports. The actress has no previous police record.

The trial went ahead after plea bargain negotiations collapsed last month.

At a preliminary hearing in June, a Saks security investigator said she saw Ryder kneeling on a dressing room floor in the store cutting security tags off merchandise with a pair of scissors.

Ryder’s lawyer, Mark Geragos, has accused Saks staff of lying and accuses prosecutors of “having an axe to grind” against the actress because of her celebrity.

One Saks security investigator said she saw her kneeling on a dressing room floor cutting security tags off merchandise with a pair of scissors.

Jury selection is expected to resume on Friday afternoon.

One of the things Ms. Ryder is now doing is optioning books suitable to films. The interviewer wondered if this is because she wouldn¹t otherwise be offered good roles?

San Francisco International Film Festival, April 20 – May 4, 2000

By Yvonne Walters

Each year the San Francisco International Film Festival bestows the Peter J. Owens Award to honor an actor whose work exemplifies brilliance, independence and integrity. This year Winona Ryder received this prestigious award. Her body of work is most impressive, especially for one who is only twenty eight. She has already created a prodigious number of roles as actor and most recently as producer, (Girl Interrupted). Her filmography lists twenty three films beginning with Lucas in 1986 and ending with two films coming out in 2000…Lost Souls, directed by Janusz Karminski and Autumn in New York with Joan Chen directing. Her latest venture will be the lead in Ibsen’s A Doll’s House shooting in Oslo, Norway in January of 2001 with Sidney Lumet directing. Ms. Ryder commented that this role was written for someone her age but has historically been played by women much older.

Prior to Ms. Ryder stepping on stage to receive the coveted award and become the focus of an on-stage interview, the audience was treated to snippets of 18 of her films beginning with Lucas (1986) and ending with her own production of Girl Interrupted.

Ryder wove an interesting story of how she came to be involved with Girl Interrupted. She read about it in Vanity Fair and through her father, a book dealer and writer, got a hold of a copy before it was distributed and “freaked out” upon reading it. She herself had gone through an “identity crisis, slash, depression” in her twenties and recognized this as one of the first books to deal with what women go through during these formative years. She cited young male characters portrayed in literature including Holden Caulfield and David Copperfield and that “girls are left with “Little Women” and not the gritty stuff”. Ryder wanted to put this out as a “parallel universe they [girls] crawl in and out of.”

One of the things Ms. Ryder is now doing is optioning books suitable to films. The interviewer wondered if this is because she wouldn¹t otherwise be offered good roles? “No, I¹ve been so lucky. I read a lot of good scripts – lots of good scripts do not get financed. I’ve always been this weird actress and get cast younger. I can play different ages, that has been fortunate for me, but I don’t know how long it’s going to last.”

She was lucid about Woody Allen as a director. In Celebrity (1998), she had no idea of who her character was or who anyone else was in the film. “Scenes were handed out a scant 20 minutes before ‘rolling.’ Everything was taken in one shot. It was terrifying as he didn’t like to be bothered and talk a lot except for action, cut & good morning.” When the film was in the can, he wrote her a note…”Dear Winona, Thank you for being in my movie. You didn’t bother me. Love Woody.”

Billy Wilder and William Holden are two artists for whom Ryder has great respect. She feels that Holden was greatly underrated as an actor and was one of Hollywood’s bravest men, taking chances and assuming roles for their merit rather than thier popularity. He often played weak men, overshadowed by the leading lady, (Sunset Boulevard) or the hateful character (Stalag 17).

Some directors with whom Ryder would like to work are Kimberly Pierce, (Boys Don’t Cry) or the Cohen Brothers. Other directors include Erick Zonka, Francis Ford Coppola, Spike Jonze and Pedro Almodovar.

Winona Ryder is a bright woman who not only acts well and selects the odd literary script, but is cognizant of the entire scope of cinema as an art form from the aesthetic to the technical…from the historic to what the future holds. She laments that “young artists don¹t know film history” and is eternally grateful to Martin Scorsese for saving and restoring classic films that would otherwise literally rot. She herself donates heavily to this cause. “Focus should be on the art of film, not on the business of film.”

When asked by an audience member why she posed for the cover of “Cowboys and Indians” she replied that “I love westerns. John Ford is one of the 10 best directors,” and loves Eastswood too. She serves on the Board of American Indian College Funds. We learned that the drop-out rate is largely due to lack of heating in classrooms and scarcity of transportation to and from schools.

Asked if she would consider being on the stage she said that “I don¹t know if I can do it. I was told that my voice is not loud enough.” She studied at San Francisco’s ACT and did a lot of classics. She has an obvious passion for acting thanks to her mother who would often keep her home from school to watch a film. She was especially influenced by films of the 30′s, 40′s and 50′s.

Her appearance was followed by the 1993 film, Age of Innocence.
