Interview: The Ten’s Ken Marino And David Wain

Jul 31 ◊ by Luciana ◊ 1 Comment »Interview, Movies

There’s here at CinemaBlend a interview with the autors of The Ten, Ken Marino and David Wain.

(…) David Wain and Ken Marino have been working together for over fifteen years, and it shows. Interviewed together, the two play off each other both for their own entertainment and for the sake of the poor journalists assigned to pick their brains. Wain may respond to a question with a perfect deadpan that cracks up the room, but Marino: will follow up with an actual answer—just as funny, as course. The two co-wrote The Ten, a feature film consisting of ten shorts, each based on one of the Ten Commandments. Among the highlights, which are also important for understanding this interview: a man becomes a celebrity after becoming wedged in the ground during a skydiving accident, causing his distraught fiancee to leave him, take up with a news anchor, then eventually leave the anchor for a ventriloquist’s dummy. Two neighbors try to one-up each other by buying dozens of CAT scan machines. A doctor goes to jail for killing a patient—but, as he insists, “it was a goof!” A white woman explains to her black sons that their real father is, in fact, Arnold Schwarzenegger—and hires an Arnold Schwarzenegger impersonator to give them a feel for their real father. A man ditches church each Sunday to hang out in his house, naked, with dozens of other naked men, all dancing to Roberta Flack. And of course, at the end, all the characters of the film sing onstage together, while wearing sparkly costumes. (…)

(…) the genius of Gary Oldman who plays such a diverse Dracula (young and old, man and beast) that there really isn’t anything else that stands out in the memory of the movie. Well, nothing besides Anthony Hopkins as Van Helsing. And frankly, Winona Rider is pretty good too. Actually, the movie’s pretty doggone brilliant.

The two-disc special edition will include a newly remastered anamorphic widescreen presentation, along with an English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround track. Extras will include a video introduction by Francis Ford Coppola, an audio commentary by Coppola, a documentary, deleted scenes, the trailer, and more. A Blu-ray edition will also be available. Winona Ryder rings in ‘Ten’

Jul 26 ◊ by Luciana ◊ 2 CommentsMovies, Review

Variety.com – Despite her small frame, Winona Ryder made a big impression at Monday’s premiere of Sundance pic “The Ten.”

After photogs spent a half-hour shooting the arrival of cast members including A.D. Miles, Paul Rudd, Gretchen Mol and Famke Janssen, their flashbulbs lit up the DGA’s red carpet when Ryder appeared.

The actress happily posed for the cameras but steered clear of the print press.

Review: Opening Night with The Ten

Jul 25 ◊ by Luciana ◊ No CommentsMovies, Review

I was happy to go to The Ten premiere and afterparty on Monday night; the movie itself was nerve-wrackingly funny. I didn’t think it was possible to break any more movie taboos yet somehow David Wain succeeded. Describing the movie is nearly impossible — part Borat, part Woody Allen. Winona Ryder seduces a wooden puppet, then plays a parody of herself. The one fault: they condensed so much humor. I was often overwhelmed; I had no time to decide whether to love or hate each gag and bit, or simply let the shock overtake me.

Winona Ryder did the red carpet, had her picture snapped, but I didn’t see her in the theater or at the afterparty. Apparently, during Sundance she came to the screening, but couldn’t get in because her entourage was too large. Maybe she decided to skip the NY scene. Soon she’ll be on the cover of Vogue; I’m happy she’s poised for a comeback.

“Ten” satire gets high-five at Sundance

ThinkFilm has bought North American theatrical distribution rights to the Ten Commandments satire “The Ten,” whose cast include Winona Ryder, Jessica Alba and Adam Brody.

The indie partnered on the $4.5 million deal with City Lights Home Entertainment, which will handle DVD and digital distribution. Both companies will share all revenues. An August theatrical release is planned.

The episodic film, directed by David Wain, also features Paul Rudd, Liev Schreiber, Justin Theroux, Gretchen Mol, Oliver Platt and Famke Janssen.

The film was described as “a very smart brand of seemingly dumb comedy” by Mark Urman, the head of ThinkFilm’s U.S. theatrical operations.

“We thought it was a hilarious, funny, movie, and that if we brought it to an audience with brains and style, it would have the ability to do better than (ThinkFilm’s) ‘The Aristocrats’ or ‘Strangers with Candy”‘ Urman added.
