Gwyneth Paltrow: Winona Ryder’s Frenemy?
In her latest GOOP newsletter, Gwyneth Paltrow talks about why the media spins stories negatively and mentions a “frenemy,” most likely referring to her former best friend, actress Winona Ryder. (Their friendship ended when Gwyn reportedly stole the part of Shakespeare in Love from Winona. Industry insiders have denied this rumor.)
“Back in the day, I had a ‘frenemy’ who, as it turned out, was pretty hell-bent on taking me down. This person really did what they could to hurt me. I was deeply upset, I was angry, I was all of those things you feel when you find out that someone you thought you liked was venomous and dangerous. I restrained myself from fighting back. I tried to take the high road. But one day I heard that something unfortunate and humiliating had happened to this person. And my reaction was deep relief and…happiness. There went the high road. So, why does it feel so good to hear something bad about someone you don’t like? Or someone you DO like? Or someone you don’t KNOW? I once asked the editor of a tabloid newspaper why all of the stories about a famous British couple had a negative bent. He said that when the headline was positive, the paper didn’t sell. Why is that? What’s wrong with us? I asked the sages to shed a little light. Here’s to washing our mouths out with soap… Love, Gwyneth.”
The “unfortunate and humiliating” incident Gwyn mentioned is likely referring to Winona’s 2001 shoplifting incident, where she stole $5K worth of designer clothes and accessories at a Saks Fifth Avenue department store.

Only more or less reliable rumour. It’s said that when Gwyneth saw the script at Winonas she “charmed” the director to get the part. Much of it also came from the fact that Gwyneth looked quite “noni-ish” in the movie. And then it was picked up by MTVs celebrity deathmatch – see download in the Comedy-section at my site.
Winona lost some parts including “The Hudsucker Proxy” but never blamed the “winning” actress.
Another thing: Weren’t they both dating Matt Damon some time – Maybe the case is more personal than professional – but I don’t wanna add another rumour….(-:
Hope they clear it up between themselves in private – they were a hot pair. It’s just sad Gwyneth dragged a personal thing into the public…)-:

with this kind of comments -if they are real- GP only shows herself to be very resentful, and above all, quite a bad person, not only bcoz she openly showed her feelings of happiness towards other´s problems, but bcoz she has talked publicly nasty things about an ex-friend (The result is as follows: GP=2, WR=0, so GP wins in “poor” education). oh my god, Winona could have done “The Hudsucker Proxy” movie? that means woking with Paul Newman! These two are my favorite actors in the whole universe!

Hello, i know it’s an old note but i just find this website today and i can’t stop myself for giving my opinion… i love winna ryder, she’s a great actress and a beautiful human being, the incident in saks it was because she was under a pretty bad medication, she had problems and was out of her mind, but fighting strong she get over that… and about “gwynie”—< i really don't like her, she is sooo fake, she can't barely smile, and the story about shakespeare in love incident happen like this: winona and gwyneth were best friends and roomies, so when winona was out of her house (i think she was filming or something like that) the director of shakespeare in love sent the script for the movie to winona's house because she was out of city and she will read it as soon as she went home… but gwyneth was there and she read it and the rest is story.. finally she get the oscar for a movie that wasn't for her, but have u ever saw that movie? it was an awful movie, ok, maybe it wasn't a very very bad movie but it was just a simply love story movie using romeo and juliets topic, i didn't find the spectacular thing on it and gwyneths performance was pretty poor, maybe because she smiles the jury got like woooow she's smiling definitely she's acting jaja, and i don't remember the magazine or where but i read that the oscar was giving to her because of her dad, like gwyneth get like "daddy daddy i want to win the oscar, pls, pls", maybe that wasn't true but if u watch the movie u'll see that she didn't deserve it. and about matt damon and ben affleck…yes, winona was with matt and gwyneth with ben but when ben and gwyneth broke she found shelter on matt's arms… so gwyneth is a beeeeetch, such a nasty person (she also said that filming with michael douglas were horrible because she had to make love scenes with him and he was too old so it was gross, even if that was true how she can't say that??
). and winona didn't say a word about her in public, she's not that kind of person. do u know the story of little women? i'm sure u do but if not she made that movie because a little girl from her home town was kidnapp and winona tottally support the family and she gave money and public attention to find the girl. finally the girl's body appear in a river or something like that and winona felt so bad about it, then she visited the little girl's home and she found in her room the little women's book, and the girl's mother told her that she was reading that book before she were kidnapped and that she wanted to be an actress, so winona decided to make that movie, she look for the director and was so involved in the production and that dedicated to the memory of the little girl…. isn't winona a pure woman?
